"Posterity, you will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that ever I took half the pains to preserve it." -John Adams

Welcome to Patriot's Lament. We strive here to educate ourselves on Liberty. We will not worry ourselves so much with the daily antics of American politics, and drown ourselves in the murky waters of the political right or left.
Instead, we will look to the Intellectuals and Champions of Liberty, and draw on their wisdom of what it is to be a truly free people. We will learn from where our Providential Liberties are derived, and put the proper perspective of a Free Individual and the State.

Mock them

Make them ashamed to tell what they do for a living in polite company.

Unlike other things I've posted, this is a light couple of minutes, not an hour. You may even find yourself humming the tune.

The State is Too Dangerous to Tolerate

Dr. Robert Higgs delivers the closing speech for the Mises University of 2013 which was titled "The State is Too Dangerous to Tolerate."

http://mises.org/media/8028/Mises-University-2013-gtgt-The-State-Is-Too-Dangerous-to-Tolerate

"The state is simply the place for the most vicious people in society to congregate. Once in the state, with the apparatus of coercion and death at their disposal they are orders of magnitude more dangerous than as private actors. Without a state you MAY be a victim of crime. With a state you are assured to be a victim of crime."

The state doesn't just prey on society, it coarsens and ultimately destroys society. At any given point you may say that the price of the state is a price you are willing to pay, but the existence of the state creates unintended consequences, negative incentives. In the next cycle the state will be more powerful and attract a lower morality person. In comparison, the market and voluntary interaction tends to benefit good behavior, so that in the next cycle things are likely to be better.

The opinion surveys revealing that a substantial portion of the population is content to have the NSA watching their every move is probably the most depressing news I've had in a while. Nothing in the book 1984 showed the complete destruction of the people as people like they're putting up with being observed continually. Nothing dehumanizes people like thinking that their every move is monitored by others, whose intentions they can never trust.

How to improve society, vote or preach the gospel?

http://mises.org/daily/5036/How-to-Win-an-Election

This is not a depressing article. This is an ENCOURAGING article.

God's created order is supportive of MORAL methods of social improvement: cooperation and persuasion.

It is NOT supportive of IMMORAL methods of social improvement: force and coercion.

In fact, force and coercion are destructive of society.

You can't accomplish good ends by bad means without loading up bad effects further into the future.

I see this as very comforting and reinforcing of the biblical world view.

Naturally, preaching the Gospel of the State and the Republican party and Wars for Democracy isn't the same Gospel as the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In America, the sun is green, and the sky is fool...

With the Zimmerman verdict, several thousand people are protesting the not guilty verdict of George Zimmerman. Destroying private property, ready to execute "justice," these people froth at the mouth for what, they have no idea. Right or wrong, he had a jury trial, by people. They said not guilty. The State was even outed as being the instigator of these protests. Why does the State encourage this type of protest? To rid itself of that irritating Right to Trial by Jury?
At the same time, more news is revealed daily about the NSA spying on these same people, tracking every phone call, every email, every communication... and not a peep. No protests, no outrage, nothing, neither violent nor peaceful. What is going on here? Can these people be this foolish?

Today it was reported that Pakistani Taliban have been fighting with the "rebels" against the Syrian government of Assad for months. The same people we have been sending drone strikes to kill, including women and children, are fighting against Assad, and even knowing this, (and you can know the US government knows full well they are there) the same people who are ordering drone strikes to kill Pakistani Taliban in Pakistan, are trying to arm the same Pakistani Taliban in Syria to fight Assad. Along with Al- Qaeda fighters, whom the US is also trying to arm. Sen. McCain actually met with Al-Qaeda fighters during his visit there. So... what is going on? Has this whole fight against terrorism been a fake? To give the US government the excuse to destroy whatever was left of the Bill of Rights? Seems like one could make a good case for it.
And not a peep again.
I have said over and over this battle is for the minds and hearts, it is an Intellectual one. The 2 stories above prove this even more.
The American people continue to ride an emotional roller coaster, while the State continues to grow by taking advantage of this.
The nonthinking fools are following the thinking fools. Both are headed for the cliff.

The Declaration of Independence

At many various times the US government has considered the document which formally declared the separation of the colonies from Great Britain to be subversive, and reading it in public to be criminal.

I wonder why that might be.

Frank Chodorov's interesting thoughts on the Declaration of Independence are worth reading here: http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/140852.html
