"Posterity, you will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that ever I took half the pains to preserve it." -John Adams

Welcome to Patriot's Lament. We strive here to educate ourselves on Liberty. We will not worry ourselves so much with the daily antics of American politics, and drown ourselves in the murky waters of the political right or left.
Instead, we will look to the Intellectuals and Champions of Liberty, and draw on their wisdom of what it is to be a truly free people. We will learn from where our Providential Liberties are derived, and put the proper perspective of a Free Individual and the State.

Using the State

A caller today cited a small repeal of law favoring unions as an example of voting to increase liberty. The state advances on MANY fronts simultaneously. It is willing to accept a small retrenchment in one place as the cost of taking huge swaths of liberty elsewhere. And this assumes that the retrenchment is actually a restoration of liberty, which it rarely is.
Working against the
state in the state's paradigm is like battling an army which uses your own logistics to support its troops. This is a losing strategy. Cut it off where it is weak, not where it is strong.

The state's paradigm is aggressive violence and the threat thereof. It has a comparative advantage in violence precisely because it is peopled primarily by sociopaths and people who are okay helping sociopaths so long as there is no personal responsibility associated with helping sociopaths (just following orders/just doing my job, etc).

Anyone who tries to draw you into the realm of violence is either unwise or an agent provocateur. Don't fall for it. As the state has more and more obvious failures and meets more resistance it will try to find people it can Goldstein (blame for its failures and demonize). Any even hint of violence or willingness to perpetrate violence will only drive the scared masses deeper into the pen they live their lives in. Remember the herd is both envious and afraid of people with true freedom. Neither emotion leads to clear thinking.
